Here is a list of common skin issues during pregnancy:
Acne is most common skin problem during pregnancy during the first trimester. It causes whiteheads, blackheads, and inflamed red growths on your skin. Sometimes pregnancy can trigger an existing acne condition. High levels of hormones, especially androgens encourage the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. This sebum combines with the dead skin cells to block pores, fostering bacterial growth.
- Cleaning Toning and Moisturizing – is the mantra to reduce acne.
- Wash your face with a mild soap or face wash.
- Avoid scrubbing your face.
- Use an oil-free moisturizer and water-based products.
- Never rub or squeeze the acne.
- Repeat this routine at least twice in a day.
- Apply paste of crushed mint leaves. Wash with warm water after twenty minutes,
- Apply a paste of nutmeg and milk. Wash after it has dried.
- Use prescribed medicated gels.
Heat-rash also known as prickly-heat is quite common during pregnancy. It is caused by dampness from excessive perspiration or friction of skin against clothing. It causes itching and discomfort. It mostly affects the crease between and beneath the breast, inner thighs and pubic area.
- Take warm water baths. The water should be tepid not hot.
- Avoid using perfumes, lotions and harsh soaps.
- Keep your body dry by wearing loose-fitting cotton clothes
- Apply a cool, damp compress over the infected area.
- Apply calamine lotion.
Itchy skin or prurigo is common during pregnancy. It mostly affects the palms and soles. It can cause due to cholestasis, a build-up of bile in your blood. Sometimes underlying skin conditions, like contact or atopic dermatitis exacerbated by pregnancy can also be one of the causes.
- Include virgin olive oil in your diet.
- Increase intake of foods rich in vitamins A, D and linoleic acids.
- Drink enough water.
- Infusion of dandelion and beet root nourishes and cleanses the liver.
- Apply Aloe Vera gel, emollients and/or topical steroids after medical consultation.
4. Melasma or Chloasma:
This is commonly known as the ‘mask of pregnancy’. It refers to the darkening of skin in grey or brown patches usually on forehead, cheeks and chin. Increased levels of melanin due to hormonal changes are responsible for this condition.
- Avoid going out in the afternoon.
- Use a broad spectrum with high SPF sunscreen.
- Apply a paste of coconut milk and turmeric powder. Wash with warm water after 10 minutes.
- Exfoliate with an herbal scrub.
5. Skin Tags:
Skin tags are harmless flaps of tissue that hang off your skin connected by a stalk. These are found on chest, neck, back under the breast and in private parts and appear in the later stages of pregnancy. A main reason for this problem is hormonal activity and friction of the skin due to pregnancy weight gain.
- Application of tea tree oil in circular motions helps to reduce the tags.
- Application of lemon juice.
- Dermatological procedures.
- Snipping the stalk of the skin tag.
- Freezing the skin tag (medical procedure).
6. Stretch Marks:
Stretch marks are striations in red, purple, pink or white that occurs on your abdomen. They occur when the connective tissues beneath the skin on the abdomen tear; this is because it stretches to accommodate the rapidly growing foetus.
- Massage with Vitamin E oil.
- Massage with olive oil.
- Apply egg whites.
- Apply lemon juice.
- Topical retinoid therapy.
- Chemical peels or pulsed-dye laser therapy.
7. Varicose Veins:
Varicose veins are enlarged twisted veins near the surface of the skin. These purple or blue veins may appear on your legs during pregnancy. There could be a little or no discomfort. Sometimes the skin near a varicose vein might throb or itch. Your feet might feel heavy and achy. These symptoms may get aggravated at the end of the day if you have been on your feet the whole day.
- Avoid excess weight gain; exercise daily
- Don’t stand or sit for long periods. Move around as much as possible.
- Don’t cross your ankles or legs while sitting
- Elevate your feet and legs with a stool while sitting or a pillow if you are lying down.
- Lie on your left so that the weight of the uterus is not on the vein and decreases the pressure on the veins of your legs and feet.
- Wear maternity support hose available in the medical stores. These stockings make it easier for the blood to flow back up to the heart and thus prevent swelling that may exacerbate the existing varicose veins.
Pregnancy is a wonderful time to plan and dream about motherhood. Don’t let your skin problems worry you at this time! Most likely, if you take precautions, these skin conditions disappear post-delivery. In addition to these measures, you should have balanced meals, exercise regularly and meditate to relax.
